Yamaha has now released official specifications and photographs of their new 2021 r7, which they’ve been teasing for a few weeks, and while it doesn’t have the same pedigree as the original r7, I’m still very psyched about it.

So, in today’s piece, we’ll go through every single spec,+ and then I’ll give you my three reasons why this is one of the year’s most intriguing bike debuts.

So, aside from the name, this bike has nothing to do with the ogr7, which was a superbike homologation special from the late 1990s with a revvy 749cc inline-four. Instead, the new r7 will be based on the mt07 platform, which is their extremely popular affordable middleweight naked that has also evolved into an adventure bike in the form of the Tener a700, a retro in the form of the xsr700.

CP2 ENGINE

The cp2 parallel-twin engine at the heart of these bikes is a big selling point for all of them, with a lively character that belies its average performance figures and a 270-degree crank that adds a little spice to the exhaust. The same engine will be used in the r7, producing 72 horsepower at 8750 rpm and 67-newton meters of peak torque at 6500 rpm. There are a new ECU, optimized air intake ducts, a new exhaust design, and revised fuel injection settings, all of which combine for a claimed improvement in throttle smoothness and responsiveness. It’s also compliant with euro 5 emissions regulations and gets a shorter second gear ratio for a bit more punch off the line, but I’d expect it to feel almost identical to the mt07 on the road.

A&S CLUTCH

The slipper clutch prevents the rear wheel from locking up on aggressive downshifts, which is especially useful if you mess up your rev-matching; the assist pulls the clutch pack together under load, allowing lighter springs to be used in the clutch, resulting in a 33 lighter feel at the lever. Clearly, the slipper clutch is of the most benefit on a supersport bike. But the assist is a nice bonus, and there’s now a quick shifter option for the r7 that can be fitted as an accessory. Although it’s only for upshifts, it still means you can pin the throttle and bang through the gears under hard acceleration. However, you won’t get a clipper for clutchless downshifts, which seems like a bit of the same.

SUSPENSION

NEW-Yamaha-R7-bike
NEW-Yamaha-R7-bike

The suspension on the mt07 has been regarded as one of its weaker points, but that should not be the case with the r7, which features KYB’s 41-millimeter upside-down forks with full adjustability. They use what KYB refers to as a separate function design, with compression in one leg and rebound in the other, making adjustments quick and easy. The head angle has been somewhat steepened, and the wheelbase has been shortened by five millimeters, which should sharpen things up a little in the back. The shock has also been altered to fit the r7’s more athletic intent, and it’s the rebound, just like the mt07s.

BRAKES

Preload adjustable braking gets a boost as well, with radially-mounted four-part calipers at the front replacing the mt’s axially mounted calipers. These new calipers have more rigidity, which leads to a crisper feel and more consistent power at the lever. Speaking of which, the master cylinder has also been upgraded to a Brembo branded radial unit, which should contribute to a nice predictable braking performance.

ERGONOMICS

For the r7 Yamaha say that they experimented with:

“… a wide variety of bar seat and footrest configurations and the final result is designed to give a sporty yet adaptable riding position … “

“… that allows plenty of freedom of body position to master different riding situations especially race tracks and twisty roads … “

So the mt’s flat bars and low pegs have been replaced with clip-On rear sets and a solo-type rider’s seat that is narrow in the front and wider in the back, allowing for as much movement as possible. They’ve also altered the tank cover with deep indents for the knees, allowing the rider to get into a tight aerodynamic tuck as well as hold the bike with their legs during braking and turning.

FAIRING

Of course, there’s the fairing. Yamaha claims that the compact nature of the cp2 engine helps to keep the frontal area of the bike to a minimum, which is important when it comes to reducing drag. In fact, they claim that the r7 is even narrower than the r3 and r125, and is the narrowest r series bike they’ve ever produced. The result is a higher top speed than any other cp2 p bike. Despite the equal power statistics, there appears to be a weight penalty, with a wet weight of 188 kilograms compared to 184 for the mt07, but that’s still quite light when compared to the competition, which we’ll discuss in a minute.

ELECTRONICS

Yamaha claims to have modified the LCD dash for this model, adding a shift light and a quick shifter indicator, but we didn’t get any photos, so I can’t show you what it looks like. There are no indications of any electronic improvements, so let’s assume you get the same simplicity as the MT07, which means no riding modes, fancy rider aids, or gimmicks. There’s pretty much just abs and that’s it. That said, considering how scant the photographs are, this appears to be a preview release, so more information could be forthcoming before the motorcycles hit dealers in October of this year.

COMPETITION

NEW-Yamaha-R7-bike
NEW-Yamaha-R7-bike

It appears to be a direct competitor to the Honda CBR 650r and the Kawasaki Ninja 650. The honda costs just over $8,000 and produces strong power from its review line 4 with a peak of 94 horsepower at 12 000 rpm. However, it’s a good 20 kg heavier than the r7, so it could be a close race, especially because the cp2 doesn’t require as much spinning up.

Now, the ninja 650 is a smidgeon at 7099 pounds, and it also runs the r7 considerably closer in terms of weight at 193 kilos, but it’s a touchdown heavier power with 67 horsepower at 8,000 rpm. The r7’s suspension and brakes are also significantly higher speed, thus I’d expect it to be priced closer to the Honda’s $8k than the Kawasaki’s $7k.

Although we’ll have to wait for official pricing, the Aprilia rs660, with a similar 270 parallel-twin engine, out specs all of the bikes I’ve mentioned with a 99 horsepower peak, a wet weight of just 183 kilograms, and plenty of electronics, at just over ten grand, it’s in a different category, and realistically I’d expect most buyers to be torn between the honda and the Aprilia.

EXPECTED PRICE

NEW-Yamaha-R7-bike

We don’t know the precise pricing yet, but it won’t be an outrageous superbike pricing, and for many motorcyclists, around the $8,000 range is very attainable, especially with financing options.

ROAD BIAS

The fact that it should make for a true good fun road-oriented sports bike is number two. If you want something that’s lively and that you can give a bit of a battering on the public highway without hitting too stupid speeds in the blink of an eye, then this looks like it’ll suit the bill, and all in a fairly decent looking package too.

STYLING

I’d say it’s the best-looking of the lot, taking styling ideas from their r1, but I’d want to hear what you think in the comments below, and which color would you choose: blue or black? For me, it’s got to be blue, but let me know what you think in the comments below. ( BBC )
